Livestock Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University was established in the year 1978 under erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University, Navsari campus; however an organized herd of purebred Surti buffaloes was started during the year 1986. The LRS was established with mandate of establishing elite herd of Surti buffaloes for improving and conserving superior germplasm.Later on, LRS was strengthened by addition of Holstein Friesian and Kankrej crossbred cattle during the year 1991 with an objective of establishing HFk crossbred nucleus herd and also a demonstration unit for livestock rearers of south Gujarat .Thus LRS started fulfilling requirement of tripartite activities of SAU i.e. education, research and extension The LRS was further strengthened with a ICAR sponsored AICRP on Goat Improvement surti field unit in the year 2001 for improving germplasm through selection , assessing production performance and to provide technologies to goat rearers of South Gujarat. Further value addition of farm waste including dung in to wormy compost unit was established with financial support from RKVY during the year 2014. The LRS has total 20.00 ha. of land comprising 17.50 ha. Farmland for production of fodder and 2.5 ha. for animal housings, administrative building and godown .At present there are total 9 sheds for cattle and buffaloes. About 200 buffaloes and 20 cattle are maintained every year Owing to continuous research and good management practices the important reproduction and production parameters viz.herd strength ,herd average and wet average are increased whereas calving interval ,dry period and age at first calving have been decreased . Further, LRS has also developed 5 recommendations for farmers and 2 recommendations for scientific community during last 5 years. Moreover, the faculties of LRS also undertakes extension activities like farmers training, field visits, TV-radio talk programs etc on regular basis. During the last 5 years about 1368 farmers have been benefited from various activities of LRS. In addition to this, the internship students of BVSc and AH, BRS and DVSc are also being educated at LRS. Various research projects belonging to AGREScos and other agencies are conducted. The latest digital services like data recording, automated milk recording-testing and selling systems have been successfully implemented at the centre.
